Results Announcement for The 1st Hong Kong Youth Astronomy Exploration Programme
We are pleased to announce that all assessments for the inaugural 2025/26 Hong Kong Youth Astronomy Exploration Programme (https://yaa.hk/) have now been completed. Organised by the non-profit organization Hong Kong Youth Astronomy Academy and supported by Galaxy Scientific Group, the programme has held numerous workshops and received dozens of project reports over the past few months since the program was launched.
Applications are open throughout the year, and is free of charge. Alongside our ongoing workshops and challenge tasks, participants are welcome to propose their own project topics relating to any of the five core skills. The Academy will also be introducing a points scheme to provide further support for participants who accumulate a specified number of badges, including equipment loans and guidance from experts in relevant fields.
The results of the 1st Hong Kong Youth Astronomy Exploration Programme are as follows:
Champion
Cheung Yuen Tai — Hong Kong Red Swastika Society Tai Po Secondary School / The Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education
(1 Gold Badge and 1 Silver Badge)
First Runner-up
Yeung Wing Yin Karina — HKUGA College / The Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education
(2 Silver Badges and 1 Bronze Badge)
Second Runner-up

- Experts’ comments: This study meets the standard of professional research. It uses archival data from ALCDEF to analyse the rotation periods of multiple asteroids, and the resulting journal publication demonstrates a solid foundation in research.
- Note: The related paper has been published in the Minor Planet Bulletin: https://mpbulletin.org/
Cheung Yuen Tai — Hong Kong Red Swastika Society Tai Po Secondary School / The Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education
- Data Analysis Skill (Silver Badge): Phase-coverage requirements for single-night asteroid rotation period determination
- Experts’ comments: This study investigates in depth a target whose rotation period remained inconclusive in the earlier analysis of multiple asteroids, demonstrating the researcher’s exceptional capacity for scientific inquiry. The research is thorough, its reasoning is generally rigorous, and its conclusions are broadly consistent with previous studies.
Yeung Wing Yin Karina — HKUGA College / The Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education
- Educational Practice Skill (Silver Badge): Sky Quality / Light Pollution Map
- Experts’ comments: The topic is well suited to the available research resources and conditions. The study demonstrates an understanding of comparisons involving a single variable and includes measurements across multiple settings. It is an excellent example of interdisciplinary scientific inquiry involving practical applications of astronomy.
Yeung Wing Yin Karina — HKUGA College / The Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education
- Educational Practice Skill (Silver Badge): Building an app for theoretical science
- Experts’ comments: The use of interactive mini-games to communicate astronomical theory is clearly innovative. Implementing the project as a website demonstrates strong scientific thinking and practical skills.
Chan Chun Wing — Diocesan Boys’ School / The Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education
- Data Analysis Skill (Silver Badge): Determining the Orbital Kinetics and Resonances of the Galilean Satellites using 3 arbitrary positions of the satellites, and automation using Python
- Experts’ comments: The project demonstrates substantial scientific depth and originality. It is well executed, logically rigorous, and presented in a complete report. The use of modelling and projected images to determine orbital parameters demonstrates the researcher’s excellent approach to research and technical ability.
As the organiser, we are delighted to see the dedication and effort shown by all students over the past few months. We warmly congratulate everyone on their achievements.
