這鏡材涉及很多應用科學，有限元設計、玻璃選料、建造熔爐、溫度控制、造模、退火、研磨拋光，以至日後如何組裝成望遠鏡等，單造一片鏡的加熱及降溫退火電費都以港幣千元計了。The production of this mirror substrate involves a wide range of applied sciences, including finite element design, glass material selection, furnace construction, temperature control, mold fabrication, annealing, grinding and polishing, as well as the subsequent integration into a complete telescope system.
